This past Monday on International Women’s Day, Man Up Campaign brought together the worlds of Journalism, Hip Hop, Social Justice, Sports, Film and Fine Art at DD172, Damon Dash’s art space in Lower Manhattan, to unite the voices of all those fighting to stop violence against women and girls.
Along with a press conference and musical performances the gathering set the stage for Man Up Campaign to announce 200 youth delegates selected from over 700 applicants from 50 countries around the world as delegates to Man Up’s inaugural Young Leaders Summit in South Africa this summer.
Coinciding with the FIFA World Cup 2010, The Young Leaders Summit will be the launch of Man Up’s five-year campaign to reinforce and support youth-led initiatives to engage the issue of VAW. The summit will also provide an opportunity for delegates to learn from world-renowned human rights leaders and each other about how to address violence against women in their own communities.
The press event featured members of the entertainment industry, artists and activists who spoke about their collective commitment to stop violence against women and girls. Opening remarks by Maureen ‘Ma Dukes’ Yancey of the J Dilla Foundation were followed by a Man Up Campaign welcome from Co-Founder and Executive Director, Jimmie Briggs. Co-Founder and Managing Director Karen Robinson Cloete was also on hand taking questions from the press and discussing Man Up Campaign's mission throughout the evening.
The panel, moderated by Briggs, included Norma Ramos, Executive Director of the Coalition Against the Trafficking of Women; Chris “Kazi” Rolle, MC and focus of the film “The Hip-Hop Project” and Man Up Delegate Marcus Gignon from the Menominee Indian Tribe in Keshena, Wisconsin. Comments from all stressed the need to provide young people opportunities and tools to engage the issue of VAW, and expressed the power of music and the arts as universal staging points to tackle the issue.
The after-party featured performances by artists including Sonya Kitchell, Chris “Kazi” Rolle, Carlos Andres Gomez and DJ Moni behind the turntable. Kitchell performed an original song written for the campaign called A Better Way.
Man Up Campaign is recruiting members of the music community to join the movement and work in partnership with J Dilla Foundation and producer Ski Beatz of Reasonable Doubt and Blakroc fame who will engineer tracks for Man Up Campaign at Dash Gallery.
The Man Up Campaign would like to extent many thanks to the efforts of artist and activist Vanessa Chakour, and the Dash Gallery for hosting a successful and informative evening. The night exemplified Man Up Campaign’s mission of activating youth by bringing all stakeholders together to create a sustainable and broad campaign to end violence against women and girls.
